Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do you receive children?

A: All our residents are referred from the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR). We do not accept private placements. Please refer to the Admission/Intake section under Programs

Q: What types of volunteer opportunities exist at Harris Home?

A: There are numerous ways to get involved.  Please visit our volunteer section to read about opportunities for individuals or group projects.

Q: What types of donations do you accept?

A: Monetary donations are always accepted and appreciated. Our volunteer section also lists donation opportunities. We do ask that the clothing be in new or like new condition.  Some of our donations come from people who are remodeling their home or office and have no use for their old furniture or decor. Please call the office regarding furniture needs.

Q: Do the children actually live at Harris Home?

A: Yes.  All the children residing in our Residential Programs (Basic, Moderate, and Transitional) live at the Harris Home.  The children in our Basic and  Moderate programs reside in cottage-like homes on the main campus.  The teens in the Transitional program live in satellite homes within the community.

Q:  Where do the children go to school?

A:  The children attend public school in the city and county school systems.  Many of them ride the bus to school each morning.  Those who do not ride the bus, are transported by Behavioral Specialist or Harris Home staff.

Q:  Do the children have access to cars?

A:  Yes.  Each cottage has a vehicle that the house parent uses to get children to meetings, appointments and recreational activities.  One goal of the Transitional Living Program is to help the teens get a job so that they can save money to  purchase things, like their own vehicle.

Q: How is Harris Home funded?

A: Harris Home for Children relies heavily on the funding provided from The United Way and the Alabama Department of Human Resources. Additionally, we are always seeking other funding opportunities through grants, as well as private and corporate donations.
